At around noon today, Fire Alarms started to got off in meeting rooms in the south hall of the Orange County Convention Center. In the south 320 rooms, the fire suppression system engaged and began pouring water into the C-F S320 meeting rooms. If there was a fire, it was contained. Through mumblings have surfaced that a pyro mishap had cause the water system to engage. It is still unclear the amount of damage contained to the equipment in the S320 rooms.
The rooms below, S320C-F did sustain damage and equipment lose, but was minimal due to the quick thinking of attendees and employees from Philips Vari-Lite and ACT Lighting. Water began to leak then break through the ceiling of the S320C-F rooms thus flooding the rooms with 3" of water. No injuries have been reported, only equipment losses. It has been confirmed that 2 grandMA2 consoles have been water logged and un-responsive, thus lost to damage. Some equipment has been lost in the Philips Vari-Lite room, but no details have been released as of yet.
Philips has since begun to dry their equipment, replace damage equipment with spares and have already begun the re-building of the rig in S320B. It is still unclear if grandMA 2 training sessions will resume and where if they do.
We will be reporting more details as they surface. It is unfortunate that we start off LDI with an accident like this. It is heart breaking to hear about the equipment lose, but as I am sure everyone can agree, it could have been much worse. I have heard that attendees heard about the news and rushed to help however they could. It just goes to show how we pull together as a collective to not only save the equipment, but make sure the show goes on.
