Where Entertainment Production and Design People Meet!

As Editor of PLSN, I get asked a whole bunch of questions about the industry.  One recurring question I get from the younger generation of professionals is "How do I find work?" It always hits me like a ton of bricks when I hear that.  It makes me think, How do you do that!

There is no right way or wrong way to find work.  Unlike the normal 9 to 5 job, it is not something you can just find in the classifieds.  Though I say that and this past Sunday, I found a small classified looking for a "lighting guy" at a local church.  Yes, just like PLSN, I still read print media.  But that is another story.

So I put the question to you, our network of professionals, how do you find work in this business?

Network, network, network. Find a small band starting out, and slave labour till you have some cread. Buy some used gear so that you can do some one off's and supplement the rig in the dive bar you are going to be in, and don't give up the day job.  Ask questions of people who know how to do it right and never stop learning. The act is half the equasion, venue staff is the other. Nice people are remembered so are A-holes. Fast in, good show, fast out. Every market is different, Des Moines is not Chicago and sometimes you need to understand that to build your 'sum, location is every thing. Like anything is a pyramid fewer and fewer people as you go up, but if ya work hard and have talent there is room.
