"Nice post buddy. Unfortunately I see so many LD's that can only run 1 console. Then when forced to use another, they just bitch about how lame it is. The theory is the same for most major consoles, only the lingo has changed.    I…"

"Wow.  Can't the bands just play music for their fans?  Why all the mess/destructiveness.  It ends up costing the fans more money because now they need to pay for more security, more barricades, etc...  Thanks for the comment."

Boogie Nights - Part 3: The Journey of a Programmer Through The Installation and Opening of The Hottest, Newest, Club!

Everything has been delivered to the job site.  It's now time to start hanging lights.  The installation world is quite different than the production side.  For a one-off, it would be no problem to hang a 30' circle truss with seventy some lights in one day.  For an install the truss is dead hung and then every fixture needs to be brought up to the truss one at a time.  After all the fixtures are hung, DMX cabling can begin.  Therefore, we can't have the rig up and running in one…

When it comes time to use a new fixture on your console, you must have the fixture profile (or fixture personality).  The function of the profile/personality is, it maps the DMX channels of the fixture to the different attributes (Pan/Tilt, Color, Gobo).  This way, your console knows what channel to adjust when you turn the pan encoder.  If the profile is not spot on, some bad things may occur.  The fixture may not work right, or may not work to its full potential.  I'm picky when it comes…

Boogie Nights is a new club coming soon to the Tropicana Casino and Resort in Atlantic City, NJ.  The lighting design has been finalized and construction is well underway.  Equipment is being delivered and the installation has begun.  Now it's time to start the programming!  In the next three to four weeks I will continue to share my programming journey as this night club progresses.

I'm super excited to be working on this project.  It has been a couple of years since my…

I Know How to Program, But Not On That...

Learning how to program can be intimidating, stressful, and difficult.  That's not the focus of this article.  Let's assume we know how to program.  Learning a new console can also be intimidating, stressful, and difficult!  Are you comfortable on a particular desk?  Have you wanted to try a new console?  If you are like me, simply looking at a pretty console isn't enough.  I must not only have alone time, but also need to use it on a real show.

For me, taking it on a show…

Geek-Squad-Like Gadgets and I Don't Know What's Happening On-Stage

Posted on February 21, 2012 at 10:06pm 0 Comments

Currently I'm finishing up tech rehearsals for Once Upon A Mattress.  By the way, this reminded me that I had to explain to my girlfriend what the show is about and explain that it isn't a sexual show.  Anyways, I'm using an ETC Ion for this theater show and the local rental shop sent me a Radio Focus Remote (RFR) aka wireless remote or wireless RFU (for you older ETC guys).  One night after tech, I needed to refocus some lights.  I tested the RFR to make sure it was working, clipped it on…
