With that rig you have, DO NOT use the 1000.

Just do yourself a fav and spec a hog 3 on the gig. Better yet, get a GrandMa if you can.. But with the pixeilines and all those moving head fixtures, you'll want the 3's effects engine. Trust me on this, fight for it if you can, heck if your renting that much gear, the rental shop ought to be cool and throw in a 3 for free.

at least you have a 1000, try doing all that on a 500 on the fly. Pallets, Pallets and more Pallets. that way you can be on the fly with what ever. start with position pallets, create a 9 dice on the stage, USL, USC, USR, CSL, CCC, CSR etc etc. and merge ever fixture you have to all of those positions. then i create a pallet for open hard edge, gobo 1 hard edge, gobo2 hard edge for all fixtures, create spin gobo speed pallets both directions. i try to merge as many colors as i can.  once you build the pallets programming is easy. i usually use my last fader for my positions and intensity. create looks moving fixtures all around the stage, a good 20 or so. then since you have alot of faders to play with a fader for color 1, fader color2, gobo1, gobo2, effects, i usually keep one with strobing fast, med, slow. and the fader next to it an override to all white in open gobo so you can get a great effect when needed.  that will help create the PUNT page.

So, I have my biggest gig yet coming up, for an artist named Lincoln Brewster. I am punting the whole show on a Hog 1000. And well, I am nervous and not really nervous, but I am nervous... Any tips?

Hi all,

A couple of months ago, I observed a single univ hog3 widget fail to push a dmx signal all the way through a system where an Enttec dmx to usb pro worked just fine.

Last night I re-encountered some widget weirdness. My super widget would not push a signal all the way through another club rig where their hog500 would make everything operate just fine.

Let me set the scene: This rig was put up by a sound guy who dabbles in lighting, and he had (7) dmx controllers to operate his rig. I came in with a superwidget to at least get the intelligent lights onto one console. The universe with the American DJ trifx worked just fine. The universe with the X-laser worked just fine. Then came the universe I unplugged from the hog500.

Out of the back of the hog500, was a 5pin male to 3pin female adapter. Sure. Standard fare. THEN, a 3pin XLR Y-splitter was plugged into the 5>3 adapter. First question: When is it ever okay to use an XLR Y-splitter in a dmx rig? I thought the answer was "never". The XLR Y-splitter first went to a run of (8) mirror scanners hung on the walls of the room; the other leg went up to the ceiling truss through (8) XYZ LED spots and (1) octopus looking centerpiece light.

I tried to use their 3>5pin into the Y-splitter to both runs in conjunction with my widget with zero result. I tried going only with the run to the scanners-- nothing. The in-house guy couldn't even get all of them to work on the hog500, so I didn't worry and said F*** them for the night. Lastly, I tried to plug the truss run into my widget (XYZ spots and octopus light), but I only saw DMX through (2) of the XYZ spots, whereas if I plugged that run only int the hog500, the whole truss run would come to life. So here's my second question: knowing that this rig was put up by a sound guy and guessing that the rig was connected via mostly audio XLR, is the hog500's DMX signal much much stronger than a USB widget's signal?

Egads. Thanks for reading. Hopefully someone will be able to share some insight.

Jim, is your rig small enough to do it manually, make it a chase, make it random, then take the fade time to zero%?

any advice about building a good random bally or pan/tilt chase on a hog 3  mine always looking  like sine wave even though I offset?

or does anyone have anything better than the standard effects on hog3?

On a hog 3 never unguard the page directory during a show because if your finger slips and u hit the set current page as template button.... When your running a wing with all the intensities and the stage goes pitch black yeah.... Not a good move their cody.
