Well here is one for thought's.  After 17 years in the industry, 10 as a working designer. I am finally going to get that oh so coveted (sarcastic tone) piece of paper.  Just wondering what others thoughts on education for a working designer are.  I know it means a few less gigs I can take.  Any other tid-bits of knowledge anyone want to impart?

Our LASER show with (7) seven LASERS is starting to look like an LIGHT show.

I was recently working on a new design and a moment in the show, it gives me the feeling of a sunset in a nondescript place. I found the CRAZY place for inspiration, my office window which faces west. Each day there are a number of different sunsets with clouds, without, oranges, purples.

I was wondering, where have you found inspiration?

Just as a reference for anyone looking at old posts, the boom base that accepts unthreaded pipe is known as a Stropini Base in the SF bay area. Basically what Brian described with the locking bolt, except with 2 of them, and perpendicular reinforcements between the pipe holder and the plate. Pretty reliable.

Hey Larry and Claude - Looks like the "good" LDs are loosing their hair! LOL!

Anyone working in Miami this week on ASTRO?  The Siemens booth and the Accuray booth are doing some very cool video and lighting.  Different from the usual trade show stuff.

A company in Sacramento, surprisingly called Sacramento Theatrical Lighting, that markets a 66# base that accepts non-threaded 1.5" pipe. One version has lip in the bottom so the pipe won't slide through and the other version allows the pipe to go through. This allows multiple bases to be stacked on on pipe so you and add weight to the base. They all stack nicely on each other for storage as well.

The other option is what my company has done. Get a pipe with a slightly larger diameter to pipe you are using. Weld a piece about 6" long onto the center of a 2'x2'x1/2" piece of steel. Drill a hole in the side of the 6" piece of pipe about an inch down from the top. Weld a nut over the hole and thread in a bolt. The bolt will tighten onto your piep and hold it in the base. We also put small pieces of steel on the underside of the 2'x2' plate to help prevent the base from wobbling.
