Where Entertainment Production and Design People Meet!

A small production company here in town has hired me several times to provide video presentation equipment and tech services, including cameras and camera operators.

Well I got a call today from one of my camera operators telling me they had been contacted directly by this company for a 13 day shoot.  I was afraid this would happen, but gave them the benefit of the doubt.

Now the scope of the show is not what I do, or want to do.  So I went ahead told the camera operator to go for it.  I did say what I do not want to happen is for me to show up at an event where this client has hired me and he is already contracted for the event.  He agreed that he would not let that happen as I hire him far more often than they typically would.

However now I am having a feeling of regret.  As this is my livelihood and this is not the way I do business.

Oh and they still owe $5500 from the last event we did.

Good techs, get calls directly from company's that they work for. The better the tech, the more in demand they are.

Also it's likely that the pay will be better VS a labor provider taking a cut, for doing nothing more than picking up the phone.

I'll take some heat for saying that... but it's the nature of the beast.

Cutting out the middle man happens in the AV world too.

We were providing A/V services, not just a crew.  My projectors, my audio system, my camera, my lighting board.  This guy was part of my crew.  Pay was the same as I pay standard rate to my guys.  What it was is the other company was trying to cut me out.
